Over recent years, there has seen a significant increase in the use and importance of demand guarantees worldwide. The Certificate for Specialists in Demand Guarantees (CSDG) has been designed to enable demand guarantee professionals to demonstrate their knowledge and expertise.
CSDG will develop students’ knowledge and expertise in the use of guarantees, industry rules, legislation and the challenges relating to demand guarantees and standby credits.
CSDG was developed by the Institute of Financial Services in partnership with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC). This qualification has been designed with input from leading industry experts to keep the contents relevant in an ever-changing sector.
Studying CSDG will enable you to understand:
- Demand guarantees – including tender, performance and advance payment
- Indemnities, Suretyships and standby letters of credit and how they compare
- Scope of industry rules including URDG 758 and ISP 98
- Parties involved in demand guarantees and their roles and obligations
- Risk issues, including types, control and mitigations
- Impact of external factors including governing law and force majeure

CSDG consists of one mandatory unit:
Unit 1 – Principle and Practices of Demand Guarantees
Unit 1 will enable demand guarantee specialists to understand guarantees, the products, processes, parties and the rules and regulations that underpin demand guarantees. As well as the ability to manage demand guarantees and identify risks by applying knowledge of processes and rules, and by checking the accuracy of demand guarantee and standby credit presentations.
CSDG has been designed to be studied through self-study. Upon registration you will be sent a detailed study text which you will study from independently.
In addition to the printed study text, a study guide and specimen paper will be available for you to download.
Please note that in order to reflect any changes to syllabuses, study materials are updated periodically. It is your responsibility to ensure you are studying from the most up-to-date materials.
Assessment for CSDG consists of a 3 hour multiple-choice examination, designed to test knowledge and its application to practical situations.
Registrations for the June 2014 examination will be accepted from 13 January 2014 and must be received by the Institute on or before 31 March 2014.

When you have successfully completed the CSDG qualification, there are two study pathways available to students.
One option is to study the Certificate for Documentary Credit Specialists (CDCS®). This professional certification enables documentary credit practitioners to demonstrate specialist knowledge and practical application. CDCS is the international benchmark of competence of documentary credit practitioners.
The second qualification available is the Certificate in International Trade and Finance (CITF®), designed to enable trade, export and commodity executives to gain a thorough understanding of key procedures, practices and legislation in trade finance on an international level.
When the CSDG qualification has been successfully passed, the CSDG designation will remain valid for three years. To retain the CSDG designation, holders are required to participate in the recertification programme. Alternatively, you can register for and re-take the CSDG examination at the end of the three-year period to recertify the CSDG designation.
Key facts about CSDG Recertification
- There is a requirement to complete 24 hours of CPD credit within each three-year cycle.
- One CPD credit is equivalent to a 50-60 minute session.
- CPD credit can be earned from a variety of different activities.
- Upon request, a status statement and number of CPD credits completed can be provided. .
- Automatic inclusion in to the annual international CSDG registry.
The Institute recommends that the CSDG Continuing Professional Development (CPD) logging spreadsheet be completed as each CPD credit activity is undertaken. Once completed, the spreadsheet and evidence needs to be scanned and emailed to email@example.com. Further details can be found in the recertification handbook.

All CPD activities must have taken place by the 30 April 2014 to be considered. The deadline for submission of the CPD logging spreadsheet and evidence to the Institute is 30 June 2014.
Submissions received after the deadline, but before 30 September 2014, will be accepted but a late fee will be payable.
The deadline for applications for those candidates whose 3-year cycle ends this year is 31 December 2014. Applications received after the deadline will be considered on a case by case basis and a late fee will be payable if accepted.
